Kubo zakura of Isazawa いさざわのくぼざくら
Designated National Natural Monument: Cherry Tree of Edhigan Variety
Furuki of edohigan eminent Japan said to be about 1,200 years years old.
Tragic love legend between Sakanoueno Tamuramaro and Otama who was a daughter from a local ruling family has been passed down. It is a huge tree with 13 meters in height and used to be also called “Yontan-zakura” [cherry tree with 48 meters in width] because its breadth of the branches reached to 48 meters in Edo Era.

“Sakura Festival” takes place during the tree is in bloom; a lots of tourists visit here and enjoy shopping for local specialty confections and Yamagata specialty ball-konjac at food stalls and stands by the local preservation society; also, free tour by local guide who is made up as Hanasaka-Jiisan [old man who made a tree bloomed] is offered, along with free hot tea. The tree will be illuminated at night and surrounded by dreamlike atmosphere.

The rotting root has started weakening the tree itself and forced the trunk to branch into the north and south sides. The tree is treated systematically based on expert’s advice to increase its natural healing capacity.
