Legend has it that Kobo Daishi found this highest waterfall in Yamagata Prefecture with 63m in height and 5m in width by receiving a sigh of God.
It used to be a training ground of mountain worship, and Ontake Jinja [shrine] is still there in front of the waterfall. It takes about 10 min from the parking lots on foot to the waterfall through the walking trail.
It is also very popular as a natural power spot due to the huge trees of Japanese cedar nearby and plenty of negative ion emitted in the surrounding area.
The waterfall has been illuminated (4/28-5/5 and 8/11-18) since 1999; you can see the subtle and profound world different from daytime.
During the severely cold time from the middle of January to early February, the waterfall turns into an icefall.
