In the Edo era, as for Kyoto and Osaka, the main transportation means to Edo, Sakata and the upward public interest became popular by route with goods-carrying merchant ship, and we sailed up Mogami River from Sakata to Nairiku in the prefecture, and it was all Aterazawa (aterazawa) could do.
In 1694 (Genroku 7), purveyor Kyuzaemon Nishimura of Yonezawa feudal clan spent time of two years three months and constructed bedrock digging of the shallows of Kurotaki Waterfalls said to be difficult place, and shrine ship ground which could navigate Aterazawa and Mogami River to Nagai with barge from Sakata was completed and carried role of central station of Yonezawa feudal clan, and encampment or Kura of feudal clan were built. Afterwards, it became business of the feudal clan direct control, and three warehouse and role shop were built on rice, and it was in base of supplies interchange, and shrine, Koide (dark) grew rapidly as merchant town and was lined with big wholesale dealer and business magnates, and cultural exchange with the upper part was performed, too.
Salt, cotton, old method, fancy goods, cotton, dried fish, tatami facing was imported and came to be exported U.S. cereals, blue so (aoso), silk floss, silk thread, pongee, lacquer, lacquer rounadoga to the upper part from Nagai.
In September, 2011, ship consecutive waterway was completed.
