Sakata-shi / Sakata district さかたし/さかたちく
Port city situated at the mouth of the Mogami River.
It has historically prospered in marine trade since the Edo period.
The symbol of the rice place of Shonai, the sankyo warehouse, the former residence of the Honma family that was said to be the biggest land owner in Japan and the personal photo studio "Ken Domon Museum" will charm you with it old and new charms.
On November 1, 2005, the new Sakata-shi was created by merging the neighboring towns of Hachiman-cho, Hirata-cho and Matsuyama-machi.
